For a label known for luxurious simplicity, this season bassike pushes the boat out a little further. Sure, the classic wearability of Deborah Sams’ and Mary Lou Ryan’s designs remains, as does the surprise-and-delight detail (asymmetrical hemlines, twisted seams). But amongst the irresistible wardrobe essentials there are bolder statements like leather shirting and chunky webbed knits. There’s even a whiff of the 80s in high-waisted denim and Less Than Zero-style double breasted blazers. The largely restrained colour story of black and white (stripes), beige, khaki and grey gets a punch with powder blue plus a wild and wonderful galah print.

All Bassike jersey is 100% organic cotton and denim is treated with an oxygen wash, requiring no water or chemicals. The majority of the collection is made in Australia, with denim produced in Japan. The label is involved with Climakind, a new company they tell us has “a unique way of trading carbon credits”. In 2009, Deb and Lou donated clothes to the Mirabel Foundation’s Give In Style fundraising event.
