Makeup Mole: Weleda

A taste of Weleda’s Skin Food

Weleda is one of the oldest environmentally friendly and organic brands in the world, being started by Rudolf Steiner in 1926. That’s over 90 years of creating organic products, so they have now well and truly reached legendary status in the green beauty arena.

Their most iconic product is the Weleda Skin Food, created to treat dry, rough skin—and one I’ve used often backstage at the shows in Europe to soothe many a model’s parched winter skin. Supermodel Erin O’Connor even selected it for London Fashion Week to use at her Models’ Sanctuary.

Weleda products use specially selected biodynamic and organic farms to produce the herbal and homeopathic formulas that give skin rich healing. The purest ingredients are harvested from their own gardens in Europe and New Zealand, and from Fair Trade partnerships with specially selected farms around the world, in order to ensure the integrity of each and every component of the Weleda range (of which there are now over 100 products, so it is considerable).

Biodynamic farms are similar to organic gardening in that they both work to cultivate plants that are free of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, but biodynamic farming goes one step further—each plant is harvested at its peak, according to the season and time of day, and herbal preparations are used in the soil to enrich it further.

Particularly in winter when it’s cold the skin needs extra moisture, and the Weleda Skin Food uses a herbal blend including calming chamomile, pansy and rosemary leaf and the anti-inflammatory effects of calendula flower, plus lanolin and essential fatty acids. This is seriously rich moisture for your skin! It is free from preservatives and parabens and the fragrance is derived from sweet orange and lavendulae. Weleda do  not test on animals. Celebrity fans who rely on Weleda Skin Food include Alexa Chung, Demi Moore, Brooke Shields and Rihanna.

[ED'S NOTE: Weleda also promotes sustainable fashion, being a major sponsors of The Greenshows, New York's major eco-ethical fashion event.]
