Away We Go with Elk for SS10-11. Inspired by the summer sun and the call of cidadas, the Melbourne-based label’s coveted necklaces, brooches, rings and earrings take on a bright, seasonal palette of cornflower blue, apple green, red and mushroom. Shapes, as always take inspiration from nature and the season with key motifs of flora, fauna, clouds and hot air balloons. Look out for beads in bright resin and polished mango wood—a beautifully grained, fast-growing wood sourced in the Phillipines. Leather takes centre stage in the form of embossed bags and Elk’s first foray into footwear. Natural jute totes, pure silk scarves and a selection of apparel basics round out the Away We Go collection. Fun, simple and affordable.
Designers Marnie and Adam work with independent manufacturers in India and Asia for 90% of production for direct access to working conditions and ensuring efficient, low-waste processes. “We can see exactly where everything is coming from,” Marnie tells HowBigIsYourEco. The label’s own local workshops take care of the rest. Wood used in jewellery is offset by a tree buy-back scheme and vegetable tanning is used for leatherwear. Day-to-day, the team look for low-impact ways to do business and hope to undertake a full assessment of their carbon footprint this year. Excitingly, 2010 also sees the launch of a range created, gratis, for the RSPCA as well as a partnership with Unicef in the Phillipines, where many Elk pieces are produced.
