The Funkis story began at Bondi Beach in 1996. That first store showcased labels imported from Sweden and today Funkis continues to celebrate the Swedish aesthetic through their own label, designed in Australia. The Scandinavian influence on clothes and clogs is apparent in their functional simplicity and timeless beauty. Often, the textile dictates the design. Printed sheaths, organic tees, quality basics and chic separates—each is ageless and elegant.
Funkis is designed in Australia. Their signature clogs are made in Sweden from plantation timber with 100% vegetable dyed leather uppers. Half the SS10-11 bag collection uses 90% vege dyed leather. Made entirely in Australia, the fashion range uses mainly all-natural textiles, with 10% made from all organic cotton. “We are hoping to extend the use of organic and sustainable items, as we do feel strongly about this,” they tell HowBigIsYourEco. The company says they are involved in every step of the production process to ensure ethical standards.
The label’s production is based on small run, on-demand, non-seasonal manufacturing to minimise excess stock and waste. The business has eliminated plastic from garment packaging, recycles all packing materials, purchases green power and has embarked on a program to become carbon neutral. Funkis donates fabric offcuts to schools, supports Greenpeace and has worked with an African girls school, where they are establishing a program where students can create items for the label.
