Guest BeautyBlog: Natalie Bloom #4

Bringing Aromatherapy Back

It’s funny how things go in and out of fashion. Seventeen years ago, I started Bloom Cosmetics with a range of aromatherapy-based products.

While essential oils may have dropped off everyone else’s radar in the ensuing years, my passion and fervour remained. I have always burned oils in my home, used them to clean and added them to my (occasional!) bath.

Here are some of my favourite essential oils and personal tips on getting the most out of them:

Essential Oil Fragrance Fast Tip
Bergamot A light uplifting fragrance that is warm and comforting. Bergamot Essential Oil has antibacterial benefits and absorbs excessive sebum, making it an ideal treatment for mild cases of acne. Simply add a drop or two to hot water and use as a facial steam.
Geranium A rich floral scent that promotes harmony and balance.

Blends well with Bergamot, Lavender and Citrus Oils.

Geranium Essential Oil may assist in balancing hormonally related problems like PMS. Mix a few drops into a carrier oil or moisturiser and massage onto your abdomen to reduce symptoms of cramping.
Lavender A classic, light floral aroma that is calming and relaxing. For relief from a cold or congestion add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to the floor of your shower. This will allow you to get the vapours into your nasal passage where they will be the most benefit.
Sweet Orange A sweet, bright aroma that is warm and energising. The antibacterial properties of Sweet Orange Essential Oil make it an ideal non-toxic household cleaner. Use it to create your own room spray or surface cleaner.
Ylang Ylang An exotic and sensual fragrance that uplifts the spirit and enhances romance. Add a few drops of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil to your bath or dilute as a massage oil to soothe nervous tension and promote sound sleep.

Over the years, I’ve realised that when it comes to essential oils, all oils ain’t oils. Impure essential oils may smell acceptable, but because they have been extended with synthetics or diluted with vegetable oil they’re not as effective or potent as those that are 100% pure and Certified Organic.

So earlier this year, I decided to return to Bloom’s heritage by launching a range of single fragrance and custom blend 100% pure, Certified Organic Essential Oils. It feels good to be ‘home’ and to have essential oils back in the Bloom family.

What’s your favourite essential oil? How do you like to use it? I’d love to hear your thoughts…
