On top of the game for almost two decades now, Kate Sylvester continues to captivate with her unique style and sly sense of humour with AW11’s Lost & Found collection. Sylvester’s typically eclectic look sees masculine cuts and sharp tailoring sit in harmony next to lovely lace and ultra-feminine. As always, it’s a textural delight with a gentle palette of earthy neutrals punctuated with rich jewel tones. There’s a distinctly sporty undertone to the collection with collegiate numbers boldy emblazoned on tops and scarves. Belts, bags and super-cool sunglasses round out the range in style.

Kate Sylvester is committed to the cause: 98% of her range is made in NZ and sustainable and ethical textiles are used where possible (all merino wool is Zque graded, meaning it can be traced to the sheep it came from).

A member of the Sustainable Business Network, the label implemented a Carbon Transparency Project in 2007, working with external consultants to measure emissions. In one year, CO2 output was slashed from 42 to 29 tonnes. Although it is a costly undertaking, Sylvester tells HowBigIsYourEco she hopes to one day be officially certified as carbon neutral.

“We factor sustainability into all our decision making,” Sylvester says. Waste was halved in one year thanks to enthusiastic staff, a worm farm and low emissions vehicles. The company takes on student interns and donates off-cuts to the NZ Child Cancer Foundation for quilt making. Sylvester hosts an Oxfam Fair Trade Coffee Break and each Christmas staff collect food for their local City Mission.
