Preview: Gorman SS10-11

As the skies opened up over Sydney on Wednesday, designer Lisa Gorman brought a touch of sunshine as she revealed her summer collection to media at an intimate luncheon.

Being welcomed into the cosy surrounds of Gazebo Wine Garden for a couple of hours of fashion and feasting was just the tonic for the dire conditions outside. As was the colourful ‘waterpaint’ print that model Samantha Harris wore (see gallery below) to open the SS10-11 collection, the label’s seventh. Harris’s bubble dress and oversized bow were made of organic cotton, which of course Gorman has been championing for years now.

Other highlights included slouchy cropped pants in pop colours, retro influences (high-waisted shorts and a divine 60s-esque shift in a great washed-out leopard print) and vibrant digital prints.

In all, 35% of the collection featured organic fabrics—about the same proportion of dessert was, too. The Gazebo chefs created an assiette of Green & Black’s organic chocolate for the day to sit alongside two of their signature sweets. Synchronicity.

Lisa was a gracious host and mingled with guests who included the lovely guys and gals from Grazia and marie claire and David Jones’ Collette Garnsey and David Bush. Who magazine fashion ed Sioban who couldn’t believe her luck that the preview lunch coincided so nicely with her birthday.

By the time the show and meal were done and Lisa had left to visit her stores before returning home to Melbourne, I was faced with a very real dilemma: venture out into the torrential rain (risking health and hair), build an ark (darn it, not enough readily available wood) or stay put in the dry, safe, surrounds of Gazebo.

The pragmatic choice was to stay dry, and at least there was no danger of going hungry and thirsty. The strategy worked. By the time the stragglers left, the rain had long ago passed.

Gorman SS10-11 hits stores September/October.
